This article may appear to be one of self-interest to those in our industry, however whilst its entirely true that less claims make insurers more money, we’re genuinely supplying this information because knowing key elements about boating safely, yes will avoid the need to claim, but actually is of far more importance to us, is that’ll help keep not just you but also your friends and family safe. Not only that, it also avoids the inevitable aggravation time, stress and money of having to make boat insurance claims which unfortunately is to some degree inevitable no matter how well we mange the claim process for you! 1. Don’t take the risk… wear a life jacket, make sure those around you wear jackets too (even the dog if you have one) and make sure they’re designed to cater for your boating activity.
2. Always check the weather forecast before setting sail. It goes without saying, avoid rough seas!
3. Always notify someone of the full details of your intended journey and don’t travel alone (ideally always travel with at least one other experienced sailor).
4. It applies to waterways as well as the roads. Never drink and drive! This may well invalidate your claim and result in subsequent prosecution.
5. Don’t use excessive speed particularly when mooring. This may seem such an obvious point but it is also a critical one as it is so often the reason for accidents around moorings.
6. Take extra care when turning (apply the same care as you would should you be driving a car) or when heading into the sun.
7. Always keep an eye out for objects in the water ahead, slow down and/or avoid them as far as possible.
8. Fit an auto-bilge as a fail-safe in case of hull flooding.
9. Keep fire extinguishers, first aid kits and warning or distress equipment in good working order.
10. Use professional built and maintained moorings. Never moor on beaches. Never use swing moorings without an auto-bilge.
11. Carry out boat safety checks in a timely manner and attend a boat safety course yourself.
12. In order to avoid capsizing don’t overload the vessel past the manufacturers recommended weight and speed limits. Evenly distribute weight (fixtures, any cargo and passengers alike!) Don’t let anyone sit in areas not designed for seating.
